My Name Is Himura Kenshin

by Chiruken

My name is Kenshin, though I haven’t always been called that.

My parents named me Shinta.  They died in a cholera epidemic so long ago I barely remember them.  I haven’t been called Shinta since I was a young boy sold into slavery.

Hiko Seijuurou, with deft use of his katana and the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, freed me and gave me a chance at a meaningful life by taking me in as his deshi.  He told me Shinta was too soft of a name for a kenjutsusha and renamed me Kenshin.  He must have had too much sake that day to have done such a thing.  Heart of Sword, indeed.

The men of the Choushuu Clan decided Battousai suited me more than my own name and proceeded to call me that until my own name was lost in the chaos of the Bakumatsu.  Perhaps it was only my skill with the katana that prompted them to give me a name referring to Battoujutsu, but I think it was some twisted sense of the macabre that motivated those men.  Hitokiri Battousai…Sword Drawing People Cutter.

I’ve never been able to live that name down.

After the Bakumatsu ended, I chose the path of pacifist to atone for the many lives I took and called myself Rurouni.  It has taken me years to adjust to this new lifestyle and there are still times when I forget myself and revert back into the hitokiri I had been.

Ten year of wander didn’t bring me any closer to finding myself.  Yet spending a few short months at the Kamiya Doujou have brought me understanding of who I really am.

My name is Himura Kenshin…and that is all.
